Still celebrating my birthday! (and getting no hw done, which will bite me in the ass come Monday)

Saw two movies - first in months - and wow, I have no luck with picking them. They were both exceedingly depressing.

The first one was quite good, despite the depressing ending - Bright Star. It needed another 15 min at the start to elaborate on the characters, and the "get-together" part was a little weak, but once they were together it was so adorable....then he died and it was one of the best-acted depictions of mourning and grief I've seen in a long time. Which was a bit depressing.

Also, I just don't do poetry, so while I'm sure all their dramatic readings had other members of the audience in tears, I sort of wondered why they couldn't babble on in prose if they had to be babbling on about nightingales or what-not.

I kept wanting the movie to end in a Keats/Brawn/Brown threesome, because it totally should have.

Second one was less impressive, which is a pity: Where the Wild Things Are. Main criticism: no character arc. Boy has troubles at home, boy is troublesome, he runs away, there are troubles on the island, boy is troublesome, he leaves. He gains nothing from the trip; he doesn't grow up; he makes the wild things' lives worse not better, he doesn't solve any of his problems (which would be easy to solve - learn to apologise and not to be a hypocrite and show affection), he doesn't solve any of the wild things' problems (same as his, only magnified)...

Really, at the end of the movie, there's no point. The boy has arrived, tried to change things, failed, and then just leaves. It's supposed to be poignant, but...I don't know, it just FAILS.

Also, I didn't sympathize with anyone in this movie. I just wasn't the type of kid to have massive temper tantrums (my sister could always out-do me at those), and I certainly wasn't the type to run away, and I would have FIXED the problem goddamnit not just given up on them all! And the solution was so obvious that even a kid could fix it! I could have fixed it at that age! Bah. The wild things mostly needed a smack on the head (esp. Carroll - I don't know how you spell his name, I choose to do so thus)

I would have forgiven the movie if it had bothered to stay even a little close to the plot of the book. Which it didn't. He's not even denied dinner!

It's now 11:04. In 40 min it will be precisely 24 hours to the time I was born; meaning, of course, that tomorrow is my birthday.

    Turning 21.

Not sure whether to be happy or terrified. Leaning towards the latter. I don't want to be a grown up!

But still, now I will be able to go into the bloody dance clubs. ^__^

I have been COMPLETELY swamped with midterms recently, not to mention law school applications. Bah, busy busy busy. -_-;; And what time I have had has been because I have been ambushed by an unexpected social life, which confuses me greatly.

However, I just finished my 3 hours midterm today - my hand still aches - and as a result, I've been inspired to create silly things.

The first is for [info]maelicia, and is Robespierre, Saint-Just, and Couthon done as Hello Kitty characters. I was informed it was cute and also that I have completely failed at getting the characters right, so whatever. Here )

The second one is just for my amusement and probably to my everlasting guilt as a good French Revolution fan, but the sad thing is, it just works too well!

In short, I have rewritten the Disney song "Be Prepared" (because you KNOW villains get all the good songs, and I was listening to it anyway) into a French Revolution song. Featuring Danton and a couple of random sans-culottes. It's actually singable! And I only had to change a few lyrics!

    Song )

    But that's because I'm a geek.

Also, Arcane? Am working on those ponies, if you still want them.

I'm finally starting to get over being sick, which makes me very happy. It made me miss a really fun event yesterday, alas. ;_; But soon, it'll be over.

In most important news, I finally finished inking the Major Arcana of my Les Mis tarot! Now, coloring, so it still might take a while to post, but I promise something will be up soon. ^_____^ I'll also try to post some quicker sketches, if possible.

    Anyone have drawing requests?

I had a busy week - Wednesday I got to go see Jon Stewart at the Daily Show, which was fun. We got to go around the back and sit in the staffer's cafeteria until we were being seated; I bumped into some of the comedians on the show, though unfortunately we weren't able to meet them properly like was planned (there was an issue with scheduling), but still: fun.

Friday was Rosh Hashanna, in which I cooked; it was a success and there are pictures to prove it! Though I don't have them, they're at home. After that, during the weekend, we went to an SMS convention (my sister's genetic disorder), in which we made a presentation and gave people advice and such. Then we drove back home, got stuck in traffic, and I had to scramble to do my homework in time. *sigh*

In other words: busy as hell.

Also, I just fell on my shoulder and it's swelling up and starting to rather quite hurt, but it's too late to go do anything about it. *would shrug but, well, shoulder*

I wish to do more art. I wish to have more goddamn TIME!

    12:28 am
    It's been a long week.

The most annoying thing was Thursday - I offered to go to work to get a grip on what my job, starting on the 11th, will entail, and somehow it turned into me working a full day at work. Bah, humbug. And the most annoying thing is, my new boss was doing it to be nice, so I could earn more money, but I didn't want to tell her that actually, I DID have other plans, so, well, I worked. And thereby missed some big welcome-week stuff, but, ah well.

Also, Changeling yesterday = awesome. I blew up a goblin's head with my sawed-off shotgun, and it was fun.

Other than that, nothing was really accomplished this week. >_< I fail when there is no structure, I suspect.

Um. I'm planning on posting some pictures soon, maybe. As they get completed. I've been drawing non-stop for the month of August, but I want to color all of them, and my usual coloring method - photoshop - is somewhat hard to reach given that my computer had about 4 megabites of free space left at one point, prior to an emergency cleansing. -_- Does anyone know where I can get a cheap external hard drive...?

...and this is a boring post. I promise to make one that is more interesting later.

As I had apparently forgotten - Vegas will do that to a girl - but luckily [info]maelicia reminded me in time: HAPPY BIRTHDAY SAINT-JUST!

I will do what I can to celebrate, but it's been a long day and my computer is breaking down and all is terrible >_

    Youtube search
I need help, people! I'm currently in a bit of a contest with one of my friends, exchanging cool youtube clips, and I'm starting to run low. So - I need advice and suggestions! Cool things on Youtube - anything really counts, but videos with music (meaning all sorts of music, not just strict professionals music videos - AMVs, etc. count!) are preferred. The only note is that it has to be either hilarious or awesome. Or both. Awesome is more important. ^^

Examples of recently shared videos: 'Vitas - Opera #2', for music, and 'Literal Music Videos' for humor. (Youtube is screwing up right at the moment, ironically, or I'd post links)

Youtube is preferred, but I'll also take recommendations for just cool stuff on the internet in general. For example, I found a flow chart of "Total Eclipse of the Heart" which is perfectly acceptable.

    Anything is welcome!

    Thanks in advance!

Good lord, I've been busy! I went to Worldcon in Montreal (fun!), saw [info]maelicia (LOTS of fun!), and moved dorms (not fun). I need to make a long post on that eventually...I will try here.

Worldcon: Lots of fun, but surprisingly small. Seriously, almost no one in costume, and only 23 masquerade entries. Very sad. But my cousin Roee liked it a lot, and wants to go to more, which is cool. Lots of really cool panels, though! Alternate history, history, fantasy, steampunk, classic sci-fi/fantasy lit, interactive games (they need more of those!), non-American fantasy introductions, costuming...very nice.

With [info]maelicia was also lots of fun - I saw her university and we went touring. But mostly we watched movies: La Terreur et La Vertu, Les Maries de Ans Deux (spelling?), the horrible BBC thing because [info]maelicia likes to see me suffer, Les Miserables (the musical and the 1934 version!...or at least the barricade scene from the latter...) [info]maelicia translated. It was lots of fun. ^_^

Moving dorms started today at 10:45AM and ended at 6:30 PM. NOT FUN. >_<

Sorry for not posting for a long time! I will post photoshopped pics and a request soon. ^^

    I have a terrible headache which doesn't seem to be going away. I'm not hungry at all and am not certain I wish to eat, which is understandable except for the fact that my stomach is never not up for it. -_-;;

I think I'll leave work early and sleep. Possibly work on one of the two pictures of doom from yesterday. But probably sleep. >_>

    PICS: "Tarts"
[info]joisana gave me the keyword "tarts" to do a picture of Grantaire with.

Two things came from that. Neither of which are colored yet, both may be - the second DEFINITELY will - but I figured I ought to put it up already, as it's been sitting at my desk for a day or two already.

The two pictures can be described as 1, "what happens when you give the prompt 'tarts' to a rabid Alice in Wonderland fan" and 2, "what happens when a fan of Les Mis and of pastries starts thinking about the two in combination".

    Tarts 1 - Warning, LARGE image )

Tarts 2 - Warning, LARGE and UNNECESSARILY CUTE image )

I will resist the urge to write avant garde fic. Nothing good ever comes of that. >________< (FR fandom for those who are curious)

In other news, there is no news. -_-;; I've been watching the Palin weirdness with fascinationg (and of course keeping up on Iran), but other than that I've been doing my job, working on the tarot cards when I have the time (amazingly, they are progressing!), and other than that...nothing much.

I should post a sketch or something to make my journal less boring. Anyone have any requests? Preferably something I can sketch whilst at work, though not necessarily? Comic ideas and things outside my normal purview are acceptable.

    Rather shocked squee!

I got a 173 on the LSAT. ^_^; Much better than I was fearing!

    *pleased, though*

Is it just me, or is every single GOP senator in existence A, cheating on their significant other and B, getting found out about it in increasingly dumb ways?

o_____O? I mean, really, WTF? Bad enough he went AWOL for a very long walk...then on a plane trip...now apparently he was also having an affair. Is Sanford TRYING to commit political suicide? Because if so: bravo, well done, mission accomplished. *shakes head*

(Ironically, I don't give a damn about the adultery, but the sheer amount of stupid put into a single week is just beyond absurd.)

Why is it that every time I decide that I need to lose a few pounds I promptly get assaulted with pastries? I mean, really. I have one, ONE, weakness on the dessert scale, and that's hot pastries - I don't really like chocolate, ice cream, cake, frosting, excessively sugary cupcakes...but pastries. Always the pastries.

Last time I decided to start a diet, I got a complimentary slice of blueberry pie, hot from the oven, served with a side of delicious homemade vanilla icecream.

This time, homemade brownies and coffeecake and turnovers. I'm ignoring the cake offering. There's no reason for it either, someone at my work just decided to bring some in.

    Bah!

*goes to eat pastries and sigh with happiness, but it is the happiness of RAGE*

Update on Iran: The military seem to be wavering - there are reports of them helping the protesters, at least some of them. French Revolution geeks, I don't need to tell you why that makes me grin.

Also, the Ahmadinejad rally seems to have been partially photoshopped to look bigger. http://kheirkhah.ir/media/Image/Weblog%202/Keyhan-ehtics.jpg

In other news, CNN, CNBC, and Fox are all morons. Fox reporters had a quote saying "Oh, um, this guy hates that guy..." and claimed that "the recount will take a long time because all their names are so long". *roll eyes* CNBC just had a reporter claim that the Employee Free Choice Act (letting unions just have a signed card rather than secret ballot) would lead to a similiar rigged election i.e. like the one that says Ahmadinejad won. The brain, it boggles. -_-;; Even if you don't like the Employee Free Choice Act - and I have a few doubts on it myself - that's just really stupid reporting and somewhat insulting to the protesters. And viewers.

...I really should get back to work. *sigh* I hate the fact that this is the ONLY not-work thing I've had the energy for, and that's because I do it while I'm at work.

EDIT: Marines have protected a popular leader from arrest, reportedly. Also, unconfirmed reports of military refusing to shoot protesters. Also, soccer team wearing green wristbands today - team is also currently winning (as far as I know) and there was a small interruption in the twitters from Iran for them to shout "goal!". Ah, soccer. ^_^

    The Revolution is Being Twittered
Have been following along Iran election violence/green revolution/call it what you will with utter fascination.

Quick update for those not following as obsessively as me (which I really ought not do, given that I'm, well, at work; but I've been working all day with 5 min breaks so I think I'm okay)

It may be slightly incoherent; sorry. ^^ Attempting to work + read + type. Besides, this is just a summary; more info is available on most news stations. (I recommend the Guardian if you want to go with the big ones)

Favorite quote of the day: "the urban youth of Tehran behaving like it's May 1968 in Paris"

    Iran election fail )

    10:44 am
I have been falling asleep at 10:30/11 recently. I very much dislike this, because usually the first time I can get online is at 10. Not to mention the extreme sleepiness all day is making me unable to do anything creative. *grumble* Bah, inner clock. I would be FINE if I didn't keep waking up at 7AM no matter WHAT I do. >_

    Random (historically geeky) musings
Today, while walking near work, I saw a plaque dedicated to one "Dampierre", some important French person of sorts. (I looked then, but have since forgotten it)

My mind immediately made the following jump:

    Dampierre = Dhampir (a half-vampire, half-human)
Robespierre ancestry myth = Robert Pierre
    Robert Dhampir = Robert Dampierre
    Descendents = Robe-Dampierre => Robespierre
Conclusion: Robespierre has a little smidgen of vampire blood, just enough to make him a bit weirded out about blood.

    Further conclusion: I = Geek.
